I
started off with 1/48 Academy MiG-21MF. To build it as a bis version I added
Aires cockpit set wich was converted to a bis standard by scratch-building GPS
box and wiring fore of the instrument panel. Bleed air vents were cut open under
the cockpit, various antennae and hydraulic piping added. I used CMK engine set
due to incorrect shape of the Academy's rear end which is 5mm longer than it
should be and I also used CMK wheel set to get correct wheel shape for a bis
version. Rudder was cut out and repositioned. R-60 missiles came from my spares
box.
Colors
and markings
Interior
blue-green was custom mixed according to original photos, since none of the
colors on the market had the right shade or hue. Upper colors are MM Feldgrau,
dark green Revell 48 darkened with 15% black and olive green Revell 361 to wich
I added 25% MM 1702 field drab. Underside blue is custom mixed a bit
lighter than the original to get a
proper scale effect. Nose cone, various antennae covers and wheels were painted
the same color as cockpit. Alclad pale burnt metal was used to paint rim of the
intake and outside of the exhaust. Silver and green
were mixed to match the exact shade of the afterburner chamber. Whole
model was finished with black wash and silver chipping added around nose area
and pylons. Decals came from VR, a local manufacturer of decals for Croatian
MiG-21. numbers were hand painted.
