At the height of the Korean War the U.S. government saw the need for a better ground attack aircraft to replace the aging F4U Corsair.

Vought and Douglas pooled their resources to built a new ground attack aircraft for the U.S.M.C.  Their combined efforts resulted in the outstanding A-47UD Raylass. The performance of the new aircraft far exceeded that of either the F7U Cutlass and the F4D Skyray.  Due to construction delays the A-47UD arrived too late to see combat.

The only known example of the A-47UD still in existence can be found at Quakertown International Airport.
