1/72 A-1E and A-1H Skyraiders

This 1/72 scale A-1E Skyraider depicts the aircraft my uncle, LTC William Kieffer, USAF, flew when he was killed in action over Laos on Feb 11, 1970. The A-1E Skyraider is a kit bash of the Monogram A-1E and Airfix A-1H kits. I scratch built the seats, cockpit, and fuel tank behind the pilot. The engine, tailhook, wheels and weapons pylons came from the Airfix kit. Decals are from the spares bin; the tail-code numbers were custom made using a laser printer on clear decal film.

The Hasegawa 1/72 scale A-1H kit was built straight from the box; decals are from the kit and Super Scale sheet 72-477.

The mini-guns on both models are resin copies of my scratch built effort. All the other ordinance came from the kits, spares box, and Hasegawa weapons set.

I built these kits together. I find it takes longer to build two at a time than one but not twice as long!
